The town of Berehovo is situated at the foot of volcanic ridge. Warm air arriving from South-West (Central-Danube lowland) creates favorable conditions for agriculture and early ripening of fruits and vegetable. This districts is one of the warmest in the region and has one more peculiarity: warming up in daytime and irradiating heat in the night warming the grape from which the sweetest wine in Transcarpathia is being produced. The produce of the Berehovo wine-makers is well-known in Ukraine and Europe.
The Jewish population was numerous and it was engaged in agriculture and cattle-breeding, maintained inns as well. Later owners of brickworks, mills and woodworking factories appeared. Many of trading companies belonged to Jewish people. There were many Jewish physicians, lawyers and financiers. Before the WWII there were two synagogues, a Mikvah, Heders and three prayer houses. The majority of Jews spoke Hungarian and German languages. Much attention was paid to education of youth, which alongside with attending Jewish schools attended public ones and the most talented students were sent to study to larger cities by the community.
Nowadays there is a Jewish community in Berehovo headed by Mr. Ernest Goldberger, an active synagogue and a cemetery supervised by the Jewish community. There are Jewish cemeteries in the villages of the district, but they are inactive. The cemetery in Blazhiyevo has been restored owing to the aid of relatives of a family buried there.
