Hust is an ancient town with its rich and peculiar history. It is situated on the banks of the river Tissa and surrounded by picturesque mountains, green valleys and mountain rivers forming waterfalls. One of the natural sights of Hust is the valley of daffodils the beauty of which attracts the inhabitants of the region and tourists from all over the world with its unique beauty. The region borders with Romania. There is an ancient castle ruin built on the site of an ancient settlement in Hust. Today Hust has over 40.000 citizens.
Alongside with other nations of Hust district Jewish people had an important position and they counted over 16.000 people. They were occupied with agriculture, handicraft, there were many teachers and musicians among them.
Many famous and respected Jews are buried in Hust. The cemeteries of surrounding villages are inactive today.
The synagogue in Hust is a pride of our community. It has survived the WWII and the only one that was preserved by the local authorities even during the Soviet Power. It was never rebuilt or reconstructed and was never used for any purposes except for prayers. It is active today and gives home for the Jewish community of Hust led by Mr. Vladimir Katz.
