Mukatchevo is an ancient city and its history is one of the most fascinating among the other cities. The city is situated on the picturesque banks of river Latoritsa.
Trading routes and different cultures are interlacing here. Having a convenient border location Mukatchevo is an original gate between North and South, East and West.
Today Mukatchevo is the second biggest city of the region. Its population is 83.300 and consists of Ruthenes, Ukrainians, Russians, Germans, Hungarians, Gypsies, Jews etc.
Mukatchevo has an important role in the Jewish life of Trahscarpathia. It is called “Little Jerusalem”. The famous Munkatcher Rebe, rabbi Chaim Elozor Shpira lived and worked here. There were 4 synagogues, 9 prayer houses, Jewish schools, kosher soup kitchen and community house of secular orientation.
The Jewish cemetery is supervised by the Community. There is an old inactive cemetery as well. There are active cemeteries in three neighboring villages.
Time is changing the appearance of Mukatchevo. There is a kosher restaurant built by Mr. Alex Rovt, Mukatchever by birth, in the beautiful “Star” hotel, situated in the centre of the city. A memorial for the Holocaust victims is installed in close proximity.
The active synagogue gives home for everyday prayers. The head of the Jewish community is doing his best to keep our sacred laws and traditions proudly by the whole community.
The Jewish Orthodox Community of Mukatchevo expresses its gratitude to Mr. Alex Rovt and the present leader of Munkatcher Chassidim rabbi Yehuda-Leib Rabinovitsh for his support and attention in aiding the Jewish community not only of Mukatchevo, but other communities of the region in support of Jewish life.
