
Vinogradovo is a picturesque town in the Carpathians situated at the foot of Black mountain (750 m above sea-level). The Tisa river divides here the volcanic range of the Eastern Carpathians into Eastern and Western parts. The Black mountain used to be an active volcano. The territory is inhabited since the period of palaeolith. Modern archeologists have found articles of iron and bronze and different tools for molding and smithing.
Jews settled here in 17th century. They were handicraftsmen, traders and agricultural workers. Before the WWII the Jewish population counted about 14.000 people, there was a synagogue, heder and a mikvah. The war took the lives of majority of Jewish population. The Getto was situated in the synagogue and on four adjoining streets. Deportation was executed between 20th of May and 3rd of June, 1944 through Kosice. 13.000 Jews were taken and only 60 of them came back.
Today there is an active community in Vinogradovo headed be Mr. Nikolai Weiss.
A righteous man, Reb Boruch, the father of the Alter Rebe, the founder of the Chabad movement is buried in Vinogradovo. The keys of his Ohel is kept in New York in the office of the Lubavitcher Rebe.
